When we started Namleather back in 2017 in Bali, we did not set out to create “just another” leather bag brand. We wanted to prove that Indonesian leather craftsmanship could stand confidently on the same shelf as global premium brands.
Surrounded by Bali’s creative energy and artisan culture, we saw an opportunity: there were many leather products in the market, but very few that truly focused on honest materials, thoughtful design, and consistency in quality. That became our starting point.
Craftsmanship first, brand second
Before we talked about branding, we obsessed over the product. We worked with local artisans in Bali who have spent years working with genuine leather, understanding how it ages, stretches, and changes with time. Each bag is cut, stitched, and finished by hand, so the goal is simple: every piece that leaves the workshop has to be something we are proud to put our name on.
This “craftsmanship first” mindset sometimes slows us down. It is always easier to scale with cheaper materials or faster processes. But we decided early that Namleather will grow with quality as its foundation, not as a campaign tagline.
Designing for real lives, not just for catalogs
Many of our customers travel, commute, or work remotely from different cities and countries. That is why we design our bags to fit into real daily routines, not just to look good in a studio photo. Lightweight enough for a day out in Bali’s heat, sturdy enough for international flights, and versatile enough to match more than one outfit – these are the small details that matter in our design decisions.
From tote bags to sling bags and waist bags, each category answers a simple question: how will this bag make someone’s day easier and more confident?.
Building a local brand with a global mindset
Although Namleather was born in Bali, from day one we prepared the brand to serve customers beyond Indonesia. That meant paying attention not only to design and production, but also to how we communicate, package, and deliver our products. Today, our bags travel further than we do, reaching customers in different parts of the world through online channels and worldwide shipping.
Being a local brand with a global mindset also means carrying a responsibility: every product we ship is not just a bag, it is also a representation of Balinese craftsmanship and Indonesian creativity.
What we learned along the way
Building a handmade leather brand from Bali has taught us a few key lessons:
- Quality creates trust, and trust creates word of mouth.
- Storytelling is strongest when the product and the process are honest.
- Growing slowly with the right customers is better than growing fast with the wrong expectations.
We are still learning, refining, and improving every collection. But one thing stays the same: our commitment to crafting durable, functional, and timeless leather pieces from the heart of Bali.
If you are a fellow brand owner, artisan, or retailer who believes in long-term value over short-term trends, we would love to connect and exchange ideas.
